Captain Sam

Meet the fabulous Whitstable Giant, Captain Sam! He is one of the two surviving giants out of the ten that were originally created by Strange Cargo years ago. The other Giant we still get to see is Flora, the Singleton (Ashford) giant. Here is a lovely photo of both Captain Sam and his good friend Flora: they are always happy to reunite.

Whitstable Carnival Association are incredibly proud and honoured to now be the guardians of Captain Sam the Giant. We feature him prominently in our events and of course he is a big part of the Carnival itself. In fact, the Whitstable Carnival Association have indeed adopted him as part of our official logo.

Originally awakened in the grounds of Whitstable Castle by the people of Whitstable, Sam reflects the town's long and important association with the sea. He has the appearance of a handsome bearded fisherman, wearing a coat encrusted with oyster shells and a fisherman's apron embellished with reminders of his Whitstable home. With a twinkle in his blue eyes, he is obviously very happy to be a giant part of our community.

Captain Sam the Giant is Whitstable's tallest resident, standing at 16ft high, towering over processions such as May Day, Whitsparkle and of course, The Carnival. You can't miss him at these and other events, he is a beloved and important link to our community's presence by the sea.

Additionally, he has also visited other local events where he is always welcome and enjoyed by all. He even goes travelling abroad, for example to Northern France in 2008 and more recently to Dainville, the seaside town in France which our Whitstable is twinned with.
