Meet the fabulous Whitstable Giant, Captain Sam, one of the two surviving giants out of tenĀ originally created by Strange Cargo, the other one being Flora, the Singleton (Ashford) giant.
Whitstable Carnival Association are incredibly proud and honoured to now be the guardians of Captain Sam and have indeed adopted him as our logo.
Originally awakened in the grounds of Whitstable Castle by the people of Whitstable, Sam reflects the town’s long and important association with the sea. He has the appearance of a handsome bearded fisherman, wearing a coat encrusted with oyster shells and a fisherman’s apron embellished with reminders of his Whitstable home. With a twinkle in his blue eyes, he is obviously very happy to be a giant part of our community.
Sam is Whitstable’s tallest resident, standing at 16ft high, towering over processions such as May Day, Whitsparkle and of course, The Carnival.
Additionally, he has also visited other local events as well as travelling abroad to Northern France in 2008 and more recently to Dainville, whom Whitstable is twinned with.
